KRI Sriwijaya-100 commissioned as Indonesia's first aircraft carrier
Indonesia has officially commissioned its first aircraft carrier, the KRI Sriwijaya-100, at the Tanjung Priok seaport in North Jakarta. The vessel, which was formerly the Italian Navy's ITS Giuseppe Garibaldi, was formally renamed and inducted into the Indonesian Navy (TNI AL) during a ceremony led by TNI Commander General Agus Subiyanto.
Beyond traditional maritime defense and sovereignty, the carrier is intended to serve as a mobile command and support hub for drones and helicopters across the Indonesian archipelago. President Prabowo Subianto noted that the ship will also play a critical role in disaster response, specifically assisting in the fight against regional forest and peatland fires.
The vessel is capable of supporting short takeoff and vertical landing aircraft. Following its induction, naval officials stated that communication systems will be upgraded to replace existing NATO-standard equipment. Colonel Laut (P) Mochamad Fuad Hasan has been appointed as the ship's first commander.
