Gunung Gede Pangrango fire prompts trail closures in West Java

On 6 August 2026 a land fire broke out in the Alun‑Alun Barat Surya Kencana area of Gunung Gede Pangrango National Park, West Java. The blaze, covering roughly one hectare of dry grass and limited woody vegetation, was reported by base‑camp staff and quickly extinguished by Ministry of Forestry personnel, Masyarakat Mitra Polhut volunteers and other responders. The head of the park, Sadtata Noor Adirahmanta, said the fire was fully put out, but teams will continue ground checks for three days to prevent any re‑ignition.

As a precaution, the Ministry ordered a temporary closure of all hiking routes in the park from 7 to 11 August 2026. Refunds are being processed for booked groups via the park’s official WhatsApp channel. In addition, hikers on the Cibodas trail were evacuated and fire‑fighting crews are working near Kawah Wadon to contain any remaining hotspots.

Separately, Indonesia and South Korea are establishing an Indonesia Forest and Land Fire Management Center in Sumatra to improve coordination against forest‑land fires and trans‑boundary haze, a move announced by Forestry Minister Raja Juli Antoni.
