Indonesia commissions KRI Sriwijaya, its first aircraft carrier

Indonesia has officially commissioned its first aircraft carrier, the KRI Sriwijaya, into the Indonesian Navy (TNI-AL). The vessel, formerly the Italian Navy ship ITS Giuseppe Garibaldi, arrived in Jakarta on September 18 and was formally handed over on September 24.

President Prabowo Subianto has directed that the ship be modified to support the operation of helicopters and drones. This capability is intended to prioritize Non-War Military Operations (OMSP), specifically focusing on disaster management and humanitarian missions. The National Disaster Management Authority (BNPB) expressed optimism that the carrier will improve the efficiency of logistics distribution and search and rescue efforts in regions that are difficult to reach by land.

With this acquisition, Indonesia becomes the second country in Southeast Asia to operate an aircraft carrier, following Thailand. The vessel is expected to serve as a maritime operations command center and a tool for defense diplomacy, strengthening Indonesia's maritime defense and its ability to respond to national emergencies.
