Indonesia considers ending automatic student grade promotion by 2027
The Indonesian Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, Abdul Mu’ti, is considering a policy that would end the automatic promotion of students to the next grade starting in the 2027 academic year. The proposal, discussed during the XII National Convention of Indonesian Education (KONASPI XII), aims to improve educational quality and foster a more competitive spirit among students.
Mu’ti noted that the recommendation to reconsider non-automatic grade promotion came from the Education Council. He suggested that the current system can lead to a lack of motivation, where students feel that being diligent or lazy yields the same result. By implementing this change, the government hopes to encourage students to be more hardworking and resilient.
However, the Minister emphasized that the policy is currently a proposal under review. Before any implementation, the government will conduct academic studies and seek input from educational experts to ensure the policy is sound.
