Indonesia considers merging BMKG and Geological Agency

President Prabowo Subianto has proposed the integration of the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) with the Geological Agency to strengthen disaster monitoring in Indonesia. This proposal follows discussions regarding the country's position on the Ring of Fire and recent volcanic eruptions in North Sumatra, East Java, and Halmahera.

Lasarus, Chairman of Commission V of the House of Representatives (DPR RI), expressed support for the merger, citing potential efficiencies in organizational structure and budget, particularly regarding shared equipment. He also suggested merging the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) into the Ministry of Public Works to streamline post-disaster rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts.

However, Speaker of the House Puan Maharani has called for a thorough study before any final decision is made, noting that the two agencies currently hold distinct duties and functions. The government has indicated that while the integration is being considered, further discussions are required to determine the best approach for effective disaster mitigation.
