Indonesia controls Tangerang Jatiwaringin landfill fire and promises legal action for negligence

The regional disaster agency (BPBD) in Tangerang, Banten, continued cooling operations after fully extinguishing a 15‑hectare fire at the Jatiwaringin landfill. Using ground crews, four water‑bombing helicopters and support from the national disaster agency (BNPB), officials reported the fire was 100 % controlled, no residents required evacuation and mask mandates were lifted, though health teams remain on standby to monitor the community.

The Ministry of Environment (KLH) announced it will pursue criminal and administrative penalties against local governments or waste‑management operators found negligent in preventing such fires. KLH officials stressed the need for immediate mitigation measures—monitoring hot spots, securing water sources, and ending open‑dumping by the end of July—with all landfills required to transition to controlled or sanitary operations by early August. Failure to comply could trigger investigations and sanctions.

The incident highlights heightened fire risk at waste sites during the dry season and serves as a warning for other regions to strengthen landfill safety protocols.
