Moch Subchi Azal Tsani released on parole after sexual assault conviction
Moch Subchi Azal Tsani, widely known as Bechi, has been released from prison on parole in August 2025, having served less than half of his seven-year sentence for sexual assault. The son of an influential Islamic religious leader, Bechi was convicted in 2022 following a high-profile 15-hour police operation at the Shiddiqiyyah Islamic boarding school in East Java. While prosecutors had sought a 16-year sentence for rape, the court acquitted him of that charge, convicting him instead of the lesser charge of sexual assault.
The Indonesian Ministry of Immigration and Correctional Affairs stated that his early release was granted in accordance with existing regulations, though specific reasons for the reduction were not provided. Under his parole terms, Bechi must report to the Malang Correctional Center (Bapas) monthly until 2028 and is restricted from leaving his current region.
An investigation by the BBC revealed that Bechi has already been seen attending religious and family events while on parole. The release has drawn criticism and renewed concerns from the National Commission on Violence against Women, which has warned of an 'emergency' regarding sexual violence within Islamic boarding schools. Additionally, former student Ira Puspitasari has publicly come forward with new allegations, claiming she was held captive and abused by Bechi for several years.
