Indonesia reduces natural gas exports to Singapore

Indonesia has officially reduced its natural gas exports to Singapore, effective October 24, 2026. The reduction, totaling 31 million standard cubic feet per day (MMscfd), is being redirected to meet domestic energy needs, specifically for electricity generation in Batam, Bintan, and Sumatra.

Indonesian Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia stated that the cut remains within contractual limits, noting that the reduction represents approximately 8% of Indonesia's total pipeline gas exports to Singapore. He emphasized that the government prioritizes domestic demand in accordance with national law.

Singapore’s Energy Market Authority (EMA) and Minister for Energy, Trade and Industry Tan See Leng responded that the reduction accounts for less than 2% of Singapore's daily gas demand. While the impact on national energy security is considered minimal, Singapore is reviewing whether the supply disruption constitutes a breach of commercial contracts. To mitigate future risks of resource nationalism, Singapore is pursuing energy diversification, including expanding liquefied natural gas (LNG) infrastructure and exploring nuclear and geothermal energy options.
