Indonesia deactivates 4.7 million child accounts under new digital safety regulations

Minister of Communication and Digital Meutya Hafid announced that 4.7 million child accounts have been disabled by digital platforms under Government Regulation No. 17/2025 (PP TUNAS) as part of Indonesia’s effort to protect minors online.

TikTok reported disabling 4.1 million accounts, YouTube about 600 thousand, and roughly 200 platforms have submitted self‑assessment reports. The government is currently reviewing each platform’s risk profile and plans to publish the findings.

The regulations, introduced in 2023, require platforms with more than 1 million local users to implement age‑verification systems, content‑moderation tools and reporting mechanisms. Human‑rights groups have raised concerns that the measures could impinge on privacy and free speech.

The ministry intends to extend the rules to all online services by 2025 and to work with international bodies to share best practices.
