Indonesia debates Andrea Bocelli concerts amid boycott calls
Planned concerts by Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli in Magelang near Borobudur Temple and Jakarta have sparked significant controversy in Indonesia. The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI), representing 87 Islamic organizations, has expressed concerns regarding the singer's past associations with Israel. The MUI clarified that their opposition is based on humanitarian grounds rather than religion, citing Bocelli's history of performing for Israeli leaders and participating in events involving the Israel Defense Forces.
In response to the controversy, cultural figure Panembahan Karyonagoro suggested that the concerts should be viewed as a space for cross-national artistic encounter and cultural diplomacy. He noted that while classical music and Indonesian traditional arts have different histories, both reflect human civilization and can serve as a means to foster mutual understanding and respect between nations.
