Indonesia denounces US campaign to undermine International Criminal Court

Indonesia’s foreign ministry reiterated that international legal principles and institutions must be respected by all nations as the United States launches a broad campaign to curb the International Criminal Court (ICC). Foreign Ministry spokesperson Yvonne Mewengkang said, “As a nation that upholds international law and peaceful resolution of disputes, Indonesia always encourages all nations to respect the principles of international law.”

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced a “sweeping campaign to dismantle the threat” the ICC poses to U.S. sovereignty, indicating that no diplomatic option would be off‑limits, including urging allies to withdraw from the court and imposing sanctions on ICC officials. Indonesia, which is not a party to the Rome Statute, noted it respects the right of parties to pursue legal action before the ICC but will continue to monitor developments and pursue a constructive approach in multilateral forums.

The U.S. moves have drawn criticism from several countries, with France, Japan and the Netherlands issuing statements reaffirming support for the court. Indonesia’s response aligns with its “free and active” foreign‑policy stance and underscores its call for accountability, impartiality and non‑selective application of international justice.
