Indonesia designates 742 new National Cultural Heritage sites

Indonesia has designated 742 new sites as National Cultural Heritage for the second phase of 2026. Notable additions to the list include the Istana Merdeka in Central Jakarta and the Ampera Bridge in Palembang.

Other newly recognized sites include the Hilisimaetano Village Cultural Heritage Site on Nias Island in North Sumatra and the Lia Waburi Cultural Heritage Site in South Buton Regency. This designation follows a process of research and recommendation by the National Cultural Heritage Expert Team (TACBN) to ensure structured inventory and protection under Law Number 5 of 2017.

As of August 2026, the total number of designated National Cultural Heritage objects has reached 1,172. The Ministry of Culture is tasked with protecting, maintaining, and managing these assets to ensure they can be safely accessed by the public.
