Indonesia sets 1 Muharram 2026 as national holiday for Islamic New Year
Indonesia’s government confirmed that Tuesday, 16 June 2026, will be a public holiday to mark the Islamic New Year (1 Muharram 1448 H). The decision, issued in a joint decree by three ministers, specifies that Monday, 15 June 2026, remains a regular working day. The holiday aligns with the national calendar that also lists Independence Day on 17 August, Maulid Nabi on 25 August, Christmas on 25 December, and a single collective leave on 24 December.
In West Sumatra, Padang’s mayor Fadly Amran used the occasion to promote the spirit of “Hijrah” through the Gema Hijrah Minangkabau event, highlighting youth programs such as Smart Surau, Subuh Mubarakah, and the Reborn Youth Mosque initiative. Religious leaders also advised Muslims to recite the traditional year‑ending supplication and observe recommended practices such as fasting on the 9‑10 Muharram (Asyura) and performing charitable deeds.
The announcement has prompted employers and schools to adjust schedules, while communities prepare cultural performances, Quranic recitations, and prayers across the country.
