Indonesia development metrics should focus on social welfare and environment

Experts and legislators in Indonesia are calling for a re-evaluation of national development metrics, arguing that economic growth and investment alone are insufficient measures of success.

Legal and development observer Hardjuno Wiwoho suggests that development should focus on strengthening society and ensuring citizens can benefit from and become economically independent through growth. He emphasizes that while industrialization and investment are important tools, the ultimate goal must be increasing productivity and asset ownership among the people.

Ahmad Heryawan, Chairman of the People's Aspiration Body (BAM) of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI), identified three micro-indicators for successful national development: the reduction of poverty, the decrease of unemployment through decent work, and the preservation of the environment. Heryawan noted that environmental sustainability is critical as it serves as the fundamental provider of life necessities such as water and food.
