Indonesia develops SAGARA system for peatland and mangrove management
The National Peatland and Mangrove Management Agency (BPGMN) is finalizing the design of the Nusantara Peatland and Mangrove Analysis System (SAGARA). This integrated information platform is intended to serve as a single data gateway for all stakeholders involved in managing Indonesia's peatland and mangrove ecosystems.
Developed using spatial technology and artificial intelligence, SAGARA will function as a knowledge center and an early warning system. It is designed to detect peatland fires and mangrove ecosystem damage, providing both expert analysis and verified community reports to recommend specific actions.
In parallel, BPGMN is implementing ecosystem restoration efforts, such as intercropping bamboo and jelutung trees in Ogan Komering Ilir, South Sumatra. Agency head Satyawan Pudyatmoko noted that successful restoration in areas previously affected by fires demonstrates that ecosystem recovery is possible when economic benefits for local communities are integrated into conservation strategies.
