Indonesia disables millions of child accounts under new digital protection law

Indonesia's Government Regulation No. 17 of 2025 (PP TUNAS) on digital child protection has prompted major platforms to deactivate around 4.7 million child accounts by June 2026. TikTok reported disabling 4.1 million accounts, while YouTube accounted for roughly 600 thousand. Over 200 platforms have submitted self‑assessment reports as part of the risk‑based compliance process.

Minister of Communication and Digital Meutya Hafid emphasized that the regulation supports, but does not replace, the roles of parents and teachers. Speaking at forums in Jakarta and Denpasar, she called for educators to guide students on safe internet use and urged continued public and industry cooperation to create a healthier digital ecosystem for Indonesian youth.
