Indonesia advances labor reforms and gig worker protections
Indonesia is seeing significant movement regarding labor law reforms and worker protections. Labor unions in Tangsel are urging the immediate passage of the Labor Law Bill (RUU Ketenagakerjaan), specifically targeting unresolved issues such as outsourcing, internship programs, and mining regulations.
In a meeting with Manpower Minister Yassierli, the Confederation of Nusantara Labor Unions (KSPN) proposed replacing the outsourcing system with direct contract hiring to improve worker protection and company cost efficiency. KSPN also highlighted concerns regarding wage deductions by outsourcing firms.
Additionally, the Gig Worker Bill (RUU Pekerja Gig) has been included in the 2026 National Legislation Program (Prolegnas). Legislator Syaiful Huda emphasized that the bill is essential to provide legal certainty for the growing number of flexible and platform-based workers, noting that gig work could represent 40 percent of the future workforce.
To support these policy shifts, Manpower Minister Yassierli highlighted the strategic importance of the National Labor Force Survey (Sakernas) data for diagnosing skill mismatches and designing precise workforce interventions.
