Indonesia doctors advise against lying down, running, or alcohol after dinner
Gastroenterology specialists in Indonesia warned that three common post‑dinner habits can impair digestion and sleep. Dr. Edmundo Rodriguez‑Frias said lying down within two to three hours of eating allows stomach acid to rise into the esophagus, causing heartburn and disrupting rest. Dr. Savita Srivastava explained that immediate running diverts blood flow from the gut to the muscles, leading to abdominal cramps and runner’s diarrhea. Dr. Michael Bass added that drinking alcohol before bed relaxes the lower esophageal sphincter, increasing reflux and reducing sleep quality. The experts recommend staying upright for a few hours after a meal, waiting several hours before vigorous exercise, and avoiding alcohol before bedtime. These guidelines were cited in an Eating Well broadcast on 1 August 2026.
