Indonesia economic outlook worsens according to LPEM UI experts

A survey by the Institute for Economic and Social Research at the University of Indonesia (LPEM FEB UI) reveals that 52% of surveyed economists believe Indonesia's economic condition has worsened compared to three months ago. The assessment, based on 63 experts from academia, research institutions, and the private sector, indicates that 46% see conditions as 'worse' and 6% as 'much worse.'

Key drivers of this pessimism include high inflationary pressures and declining job creation. Approximately 78% of experts identified current inflation pressures as high or very high. This coincides with BPS data showing annual inflation reached 3.28% in September 2026, driven largely by food, beverage, and tobacco sectors. Specific price spikes were noted in commodities such as red bird's eye chili and beef.

Furthermore, 73% of respondents reported that job creation has decreased compared to six months ago. The business environment also faced negative sentiment, with 56% of experts stating it has deteriorated over the last three months.
