Indonesia emphasizes human rights standards for business and OECD goals
The Indonesian government and the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) are emphasizing the strengthening of human rights-based business management standards. Human Rights Minister Natalius Pigai stated that human rights have become a primary focus in international trade and are a key requirement for membership in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).
Pigai noted that multinational economic organizations may eventually mandate that countries possess specific human rights regulations. To support Indonesia's goal of full OECD membership, the Ministry of Human Rights plans to collaborate with stakeholders to socialize the importance of human rights within the business sector.
Separately, the National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) is advocating for digital platform companies to share the burden of social security contributions for gig workers. A Komnas HAM study found that many platform workers face weak bargaining power and must work over 12 hours a day due to high commission cuts. The commission recommends assessing employment relationships based on actual working conditions rather than just contractual terms, following International Labour Organization (ILO) criteria.
