Indonesia establishes National Peatland and Mangrove Management Agency

President Prabowo Subianto has established the National Peatland and Mangrove Management Agency (BPGMN) to address forest and land fires. Sultan Baktiar Najamudin, Chairman of the Regional Representative Council (DPD RI), expressed hope that the agency will go beyond fire prevention to utilize peatlands and mangrove areas as hubs for food and energy development.

Najamudin noted that Indonesia possesses some of the world's largest peatland and mangrove areas. He emphasized that optimal management is necessary to prevent these regions from becoming fire hazards due to heat exposure, while also calling for the agency to be innovative, modern, and strong.
