Indonesia cuts natural gas exports to Singapore to prioritize domestic needs

Indonesia has begun reducing its natural gas exports to Singapore by 31 billion British thermal units per day (BBTUD), effective October 24, 2026. The reduction is being implemented to prioritize domestic energy security and support the national electricity sector, particularly in Sumatra, Batam, and Bintan.

The reduction consists of 15 BBTUD from the Natuna region, redirected to PLN Batam via the WNTS–Pulau Pemping–Batam pipeline, and 16 BBTUD from Sumatra, specifically the Jambi Merang field, via the Trans Gas Indonesia (TGI) pipeline. This move follows directives from President Prabowo Subianto to ensure national resource availability and comes amid discussions by Energy Minister Bahlil Lahadalia regarding the potential non-renewal of export contracts for countries perceived as not showing mutual respect.

Singapore’s Energy Market Authority (EMA) stated that the reduction represents less than 2% of the nation’s total daily gas demand, which exceeds 1,000 BBTUD. While importers are expected to take contractual steps to address the supply disruption, Singapore has prepared contingency plans, including the ability to import additional liquefied natural gas (LNG) from diverse global sources. Prime Minister Lawrence Wong emphasized that all parties are expected to honor their commercial commitments.
