Indonesia launches massive national school revitalization program

The Indonesian government is implementing an extensive school revitalization program aimed at improving educational infrastructure and equity across the nation. Under the administration of President Prabowo Subianto, the initiative seeks to upgrade classrooms and facilities in schools and boarding schools (pesantren) to ensure safe and comfortable learning environments.

In Papua, Minister of Primary and Secondary Education Abdul Mu’ti announced that 214 schools have signed cooperation agreements for revitalization in 2026, with a total budget of Rp208.56 billion. This effort is part of a broader strategy to improve access to quality education in eastern Indonesia. Additionally, programs like 'Sekolah Rakyat' and 'Sekolah Garuda' are being utilized to strengthen educational access for children in Papua.

The national scale of the project is significant. Following the repair of approximately 17,000 educational units by 2025, the government aims to expand the scope to 71,744 schools in the second year of the current administration. Long-term targets include repairing 100,000 schools in 2027, another 100,000 in 2028, and completing renovations for all remaining schools by 2029 to support the 'Indonesia Emas 2045' vision.
