Healthcare accessibility and disease prevention efforts in Indonesia
Various healthcare initiatives and challenges are being addressed across Indonesia. While the COVID-19 pandemic has increased public awareness regarding the importance of routine medical check-ups, high costs remain a significant barrier to regular adoption. In response, providers like Bumame are introducing price-guarantee initiatives to improve affordability.
Public health efforts are also focusing on disease prevention and accessibility. The Jakarta Pusat City Government has launched integrated tuberculosis (TB) tracing and free health check-up programs in Kwitang to detect the disease early and provide necessary medication. Meanwhile, the BPJS Kesehatan national health insurance system continues to facilitate patient access to services, with users reporting efficient referral processes and low-cost care in regions such as Sorong, West Papua.
In specialized medicine, experts emphasize the necessity of personalized cancer treatment. Radiation oncologists note that decisions regarding radiotherapy, surgery, or chemotherapy must be tailored to individual tumor locations and patient conditions rather than following a one-size-fits-all approach.
