Indonesia Expands Mobile Library Program to Boost Child Literacy

Health experts cite studies showing that reading books for at least 30 minutes a day can improve brain health, reduce stress and may extend lifespan. A 2016 Yale study of 3,635 adults found daily readers lived on average 23 months longer than non‑readers, and neurologists note lower risks of cognitive decline among habitual readers.

In line with these benefits, Indonesia has launched an expanded mobile‑library initiative, called Mobil Pintar (MoPi), to travel from Sabang to Merauke. Launched on National Children’s Day 2026, the program aims to provide books, storytelling sessions, and interactive educational activities to children, especially those in remote or underserved areas. The effort is promoted by government and private partners as a way to ensure inclusive, equitable access to literacy resources across the archipelago.
