Indonesia Faces Aging Population Challenge as Elderly Share Nears 12%

Indonesia has entered an "aging population" phase, with the proportion of people aged 60 and over reaching about 12 % of the total, roughly 34 million individuals. The latest inter‑census survey shows the total fertility rate falling to 2.13 children per woman, near replacement level, while the overall population growth slows to 1.08 % per year and the dependency ratio climbs to 45.05.

Government officials warn that the demographic shift will expand the "sandwich generation" burden, as families must support both school‑age children and elderly parents.
