Indonesia to implement e-commerce tax on October 1, 2026

Indonesia's Directorate General of Taxes (DJP) has confirmed that the collection of income tax (PPh) for online merchants via digital marketplaces will officially begin on October 1, 2026. This implementation follows previous delays intended to ensure system readiness and protect consumer purchasing power. The four major platforms designated to act as tax collectors are Tokopedia, Shopee, Lazada, and Blibli.

Director General of Taxes Bimo Wijayanto stated that the platforms have completed technical preparations and system sandboxing. The policy, based on Ministry of Finance Regulation (PMK) Number 37 of 2025, aims to formalize digital economic activities. This comes as Indonesia's digital economy continues to grow, with projections suggesting a gross merchandise value of approximately US$99 billion by 2025.

Separately, reports indicate that while Indonesia has nearly 23 million crypto asset consumer accounts, the nation faces challenges in becoming a global crypto hub due to liquidity and competitiveness issues. Additionally, a GSMA report highlights that 86% of Indonesians feel confident in their ability to protect themselves from scams, though awareness of government prevention programs remains low at 50%.
