Indonesian lawmakers discuss democratic freedoms and corruption
Members of Indonesia's House of Representatives (DPR) Commission III have addressed several key issues regarding governance and law enforcement. Lawmakers Ahmad Sahroni and Habiburokhman highlighted a shift toward more humanistic policing, specifically noting Central Java Police Chief Irjen Roy Hardi Siahaan's decision to meet student protesters in Semarang without heavy security. They characterized this approach as a way to protect freedom of expression and maintain public order through dialogue rather than repression.
On the legal front, Commission III member Soedeson Tandra argued that state financial loss must remain a core component of the definition of corruption to maintain its status as an extraordinary crime. This follows proposals to align the definition with international conventions.
Additionally, lawmaker Abdullah expressed strong condemnation regarding alleged corruption within the National Disaster Management Authority (BNPB). This follows a Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) sting operation involving the misuse of disaster preparedness funds. Abdullah also called for increased synergy between Customs and the Jakarta Metropolitan Police to dismantle drug trafficking networks by targeting financiers and money laundering operations.
