Indonesia ferry disappears in Java Sea storm with many missing
An Indonesian ferry carrying 243 people, including 213 passengers and 30 crew members, disappeared from radar after being struck by a severe storm in the Java Sea. The vessel was traveling from the island of Java to Borneo.
Rescue operations are currently underway, coordinated from Borneo. While official reports initially indicated that 53 people had been rescued, local media outlets in Banjarmasin reported that as many as 115 individuals have been saved. However, a large number of people remain missing.
At least one death has been confirmed, involving a passenger who died under unspecified circumstances after being rescued. I Putu Sudayana, head of local rescue services, stated that teams are making maximum efforts to save victims and have successfully evacuated some passengers directly from the site.
