Indonesia faces severe forest fires and toxic haze crisis
Indonesia is experiencing its most severe wildfire season in approximately 11 years, with burned land area increasing from 895,650 hectares in August to 1.92 million hectares by late September 2026. The fires, exacerbated by El Niño-related droughts and land-clearing practices, have produced thick toxic haze that has spread across Southeast Asia, affecting air quality in Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines, and Timor Leste.
The environmental crisis has triggered significant public health and social disruptions. In South Kalimantan, acute respiratory infection (ISPA) cases averaged 10,000 per week for five consecutive weeks. In Palembang, air quality reached hazardous levels, with IQAir recording an AQI of 1,083 at Universitas Sriwijaya. The haze has also led to school closures and disrupted over 2,600 domestic flights.
Political tension has mounted as hundreds of students protested in Jakarta, demanding the resignation of President Prabowo Subianto and Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka. Additionally, a corruption scandal has emerged following the arrest of five individuals for the alleged embezzlement of emergency funds from the National Disaster Management Agency.
