Indonesia forest fires cause massive economic and health losses
Forest and land fires (karhutla) in Indonesia throughout 2026 have caused significant ecological, economic, and health crises. Research from the Center of Economic and Law Studies (CELIOS) estimates total economic and health losses between Rp359.58 trillion and Rp565.03 trillion. Economic damages from physical asset destruction and production disruptions are projected at Rp340.38 trillion, representing a 2.69 percent contraction in national GDP. The forestry and timber sector faces the heaviest impact, with estimated losses of Rp262.33 trillion.
Health impacts are severe, with estimated costs for treating Acute Respiratory Infection (ISPA) reaching Rp103.3 trillion. CELIOS reports that approximately 17.4 million people experienced ISPA symptoms but did not seek medical treatment due to cost or facility limitations. The Ministry of Health is monitoring dangerous air quality levels, specifically in Kotawaringin Timur and Palangka Raya.
The fires have also triggered diplomatic tensions in Southeast Asia, as smoke pollution affects Singapore and Malaysia. Domestically, the government is strengthening bans on land clearing via burning, while the Ministry of Forestry has reported evidence of illegal logging and unauthorized heavy machinery in Central Kalimantan. In East Java, tourism has declined following the temporary closure of Mount Bromo and Ijen Crater due to the fires.
