Indonesia government encourages constructive student criticism

As Indonesia approaches its 81st Independence Day, government officials and political observers are discussing the role of student activism and public criticism in the nation's democracy.

Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs, Djamari Chaniago, stated that the government does not reject criticism, noting that public input serves as essential material for evaluating and improving policies and public services. While affirming that freedom of expression is a right that must be respected, Chaniago emphasized that demonstrations must remain peaceful and orderly. He drew a firm line against violence, property damage, or the destruction of public facilities.

Fernando Emas, Director of Rumah Politik Indonesia, encouraged students to use the independence month as a momentum to strengthen democracy through constructive criticism. He suggested that for criticism to be effective, it should be supported by data, arguments, and proposed solutions rather than mere rejection or mass action. Similarly, Muhammad Qodari, Head of the Government Communications Agency, called for the independence period to be used as a moment to strengthen national unity.
