Indonesia extends mandatory halal certification deadline to 2028
The Indonesian government has officially extended the deadline for mandatory halal certification for several product and service categories to October 2028. This decision, announced through an amendment to Government Regulation No. 42/2024, postpones the original enforcement date of October 18, 2026. The extension aims to accommodate the readiness of the national halal ecosystem and incorporates feedback from various business associations and industries.
Under the new timeline, micro and small enterprises (UMK) have until October 17, 2028, to comply regarding food, beverages, and slaughtering services. Similarly, the mandate for imported food, beverages, and slaughtering products is set to begin on October 18, 2028, allowing time for the completion of mutual recognition agreements for international certificates. Other categories, including natural medicines, cosmetics, and health supplements, also see their deadlines extended to October 2028.
Industry responses have been mixed but generally constructive. The Indonesian National Importers Association (GINSI) expressed support for the policy to protect consumers, while the Indonesian MSME Association (Akumindo) welcomed the delay as a necessary relief due to infrastructure and business readiness challenges. Meanwhile, LPPOM MUI has urged businesses not to delay their certification processes despite the extension, emphasizing that halal certification serves as a tool to build consumer trust and ensure business sustainability.
