Indonesia haze from peatland fires forces school shifts
Peatland fires in Indonesia have caused thick haze, leading to changes in educational activities in several regions. In East Kolaka Regency, Southeast Sulawesi, schools in the Tinondo, Lalolae, and Mowewe districts have transitioned to remote learning. Acting Regent Yosep Sahaka stated that the environment in these areas has become unfriendly due to smoke from peat swamp fires, posing potential health risks to children. The shift to online learning is scheduled from September 10 to September 14, 2026, though the policy remains situational based on air quality improvements.
In West Sumatra, the Education Office is monitoring deteriorating air quality, particularly in Padang, which has reached unhealthy levels according to IQAir. Unlike East Kolaka, the West Sumatra Education Office has not yet implemented uniform distance learning. Head of the West Sumatra Education Office, Habibul Fuadi, noted that the haze conditions vary significantly across the province, and decisions regarding remote learning will be made on a situational basis after further monitoring and coordination with relevant authorities.
