Indonesia hosts global forum on digital copyright royalties

Indonesia is hosting the Global Dialogue on Cross-Border Copyright Royalty Governance in the Digital Era in Bali from October 7 to 9, 2026. The forum aims to address the challenges of managing royalties across national borders in the digital age, involving representatives from over 28 countries, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), and various collective management organizations.

Minister of Law Supratman Andi Agtas stated that the initiative seeks to move royalty negotiations away from purely private business-to-business contracts toward standardized international parameters. The goal is to establish a more transparent, accountable, and fair ecosystem for content creators, particularly those in developing nations. The Indonesian government has submitted a proposal to WIPO to advocate for these global standards.

Key focus areas for the dialogue include transparency, accountability, and interoperability in royalty management systems. Officials noted that as creative works spread instantly across digital platforms, existing legal frameworks and information systems must be synchronized to ensure creators receive equitable economic returns.
