Indonesia implements BUMN restructuring and faces nickel sector challenges
Indonesia is undergoing significant shifts in its state-owned enterprise (BUMN) and nickel sectors. The Danantara Investment Management Agency (BPI) plans to reduce the number of BUMN entities from 1,074 to approximately 200 by the end of 2026. CEO Rosan Roeslani stated that this restructuring involves the closure, merger, divestment, or consolidation of roughly 874 companies, including subsidiaries and sub-subsidiaries, to achieve management efficiency.
In the private nickel sector, PT Gunbuster Nickel Industry (GNI) in North Morowali has announced plans to lay off up to 1,900 employees. The company cited severe financial difficulties, an ongoing debt restructuring process (PKPU), and the fact that two of its three smelters have ceased operations as primary reasons for the workforce adjustment.
Additionally, PT Vale Indonesia Tbk is exploring alternative sulfur sources, such as extracting it from pyrite, to mitigate rising costs and supply chain disruptions. The industry faces challenges due to a heavy reliance on sulfur imports from the Middle East, which are vulnerable to geopolitical tensions and potential disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz.
