Indonesia implements flood control projects in Jakarta and Semarang

Indonesian authorities are implementing diverse strategies to combat flooding in major urban areas. In Jakarta, the Provincial Government has allocated Rp2.62 trillion for the Jaktirta project. This large-scale flood control initiative, managed by the Water Resources Agency, covers 23 locations and includes the construction of polder systems, pumps, reservoirs, and coastal embankments to mitigate tidal flooding.

In Semarang, officials are turning to technology by preparing to deploy ‘Flood Eye,’ an artificial intelligence-based detection system. Developed through a partnership involving KONEKSI, the University of Wollongong, Telkom University, and the Semarang Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), the system aims to provide flood predictions 2 to 3 hours in advance. The initial phase will involve installing sensors at six points along the Babon River to monitor water levels, flow speed, and rainfall, allowing for earlier evacuations and logistical adjustments via WhatsApp alerts.
