Indonesia implements remote learning amid volcanic ash and forest fire smoke
Multiple regions in Indonesia have implemented remote learning (PJJ) for various educational levels due to environmental hazards. In Banten, provinces and cities like Serang, Tangerang Selatan, and Lebak have shifted to remote learning to protect students from volcanic ash following the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau.
In DKI Jakarta, remote learning has been mandated for all levels from PAUD to SMK to mitigate exposure to volcanic particles. Similarly, in West Java, authorities have prepared evacuation posts and implemented remote learning in high-intensity ash areas. In some areas like Bandung and Cimahi, schools remain operational with a focus on mask-wearing and minimizing outdoor activities.
Separately, in Riau, Pekanbaru has implemented remote learning for PAUD through SMP levels due to poor air quality caused by forest and land fires. In Palangka Raya, remote learning has been extended because the Air Pollution Index (ISPU) remains above 200. To manage the volcanic ash, authorities in Tangerang Selatan and Jakarta have deployed personnel to spray roads to reduce dust levels.
