Indonesia insurance sector sees regulatory and market shifts

The Indonesian insurance industry is undergoing several strategic shifts and regulatory developments. The Financial Services Authority (OJK) is pushing to integrate digital financial literacy into school curricula to help the younger generation navigate risks such as fraud, scams, and data security issues.

In terms of market performance, OJK reports that three sectors dominate general insurance premiums: property (25.15%), credit (16.95%), and motor vehicles (16.67%), collectively accounting for nearly 60% of the industry as of July 2026. Additionally, the agency noted that agents remain a vital distribution channel, contributing 28.7% to life insurance premiums and 10% to general insurance.

On the corporate front, Sompo Insurance is launching Sompo Syariah in October 2026 following a spin-off of its Sharia unit to comply with regulatory requirements and tap into Indonesia's growing Sharia community. Meanwhile, industry experts emphasize the importance of early insurance adoption to prevent significant financial disruption from health-related costs.
