Indonesia investigates citizens allegedly joining Russian military

The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs is investigating reports of Indonesian citizens (WNI) allegedly joining the Russian military. Spokesperson Yvonne Mewengkang confirmed receiving a private WhatsApp message from one of the individuals, who requested the message be forwarded to Foreign Minister Sugiono.

While no official formal letters have been received by the Ministry, authorities are conducting a comprehensive verification process. This includes coordinating with the Indonesian Embassies in Moscow and Kyiv, as well as relevant domestic agencies, to confirm the identities, citizenship status, recruitment processes, employment contracts, and specific military units or locations of the individuals involved.

The Ministry is also investigating whether these citizens were victims of fraud, exploitation, or misleading job offers. Officials noted that Indonesian law has clear provisions regarding citizens serving in foreign militaries without presidential permission. If exploitation is confirmed, the government intends to take necessary protection measures.
