Indonesia investigates KMP Virgo Transport 8 import legality
The Indonesian Ministry of Transportation has committed to investigating the import process of the KMP Virgo Transport 8 following its accident in the Java Sea. Concerns have been raised regarding the vessel's age, as it was reportedly 38 years old when it entered Indonesia and 39 years old at the time of the accident.
Sofwan Dedy Ardyanto, a member of Commission V of the DPR RI, noted that according to Ministry of Trade Regulation Number 20 of 2021, passenger ships and ferries are permitted to be imported with a maximum age of 15 years. He has called for a thorough investigation into the legal basis and permits used during the ship's importation.
Deputy Minister of Transportation Suntana stated that the ministry is working with Commission V to discuss maritime accidents and is committed to implementing policies to mitigate risks and prevent similar incidents in the future. While the age of the vessel is under scrutiny, officials noted that technical and operational factors are still being evaluated to determine the exact cause of the accident.
