Indonesia investigates mask price surges following Anak Krakatau eruption

Following the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau, which has spread volcanic ash across the Sunda Strait, Jakarta, and surrounding areas, mask prices have reportedly surged up to ten times their normal rate. In response, the Indonesian Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) announced it will summon business operators to clarify these price hikes and investigate potential stock hoarding.

Aji Muhawarman, Head of the Bureau of Communication and Public Information at Kemenkes, stated that while shortages are occurring at the retail level, stocks at the producer and distributor levels remain sufficient. The Ministry is working with the Ministry of Trade and local governments to monitor field prices and ensure supply stability in affected provinces, including Lampung, Banten, West Java, and Jakarta.

To support affected regions, the Ministry has distributed over 100,000 N95 and medical masks, along with goggles, medicines, and other health equipment. Authorities have urged the public to avoid panic buying and have warned producers against artificial supply restrictions or unreasonable price increases.
