Indonesia Labor Coalition Submits Draft Employment Bill, Warns of August Unrest

A coalition of 18 labor confederations representing 157 worker federations, known as the Great Indonesian Labor Struggle Coalition, handed a draft Employment Bill to Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Cucun Ahmad Syamsurijal on 3 August 2026. The draft, prepared over a week, seeks to replace labor provisions in the 2020 Job Creation Law following Constitutional Court Decision No. 168/PUU‑XXI/2023, which set an October 31 2026 deadline for a separate employment law.

Andi Gani Nena, president of the Confederation of All Indonesian Workers’ Unions (KSPSI) and adviser to the National Police chief, warned that if the draft is not taken seriously, major unrest could erupt in August, echoing the large‑scale protests that followed the Omnibus Law reforms. He urged both the legislative and executive branches to prioritize discussions to avoid repeat demonstrations.

The coalition called on the DPR and the government to accelerate the drafting process and prevent a prolonged, contested law‑making cycle.
