Indonesia Labor Ministry to Clarify Layoff Data Discrepancy

The Ministry of Labor and the Indonesian Employers Association have reported very different figures for layoffs (PHK) in the first half of 2026. Apindo says 126,000 workers lost jobs Jan‑May 2026, based on BPJS data, while the ministry records only 32,389 cases up to June. Minister Yassierli said the gap will be investigated through clarification and verification after a presidential briefing.

The ministry also outlined a mitigation plan that includes early verification of layoff rumors, mediation between firms and workers, and monitoring by labor authorities. If layoffs cannot be avoided, workers will receive benefits under the Job Loss Insurance (JKP) program, including up to 60% of wages for about six months, plus training and job‑placement assistance. The effort aims to curb the impact of a global economic slowdown that has hit Indonesia’s manufacturing sector.
