Indonesian labor leaders demand repeal of 0.5x severance pay rule
Labor leaders and employer associations in Indonesia are seeking common ground regarding the upcoming Labor Law Bill. The Indonesian Confederation of Trade Unions (KSPI) and the Koalisi Besar Perjuangan Buruh Indonesia (KBPBI) have expressed strong opposition to several existing regulations. Specifically, labor leaders are demanding the revocation of Government Regulation No. 35 of 2021, which allows for severance pay of only 0.5 times the standard rate for employees terminated due to company efficiency.
KSPI President Said Iqbal has urged the government to avoid rushing the legislative process, noting that the new bill may expand regulations to include digital platform workers, medical professionals, and academic staff. Meanwhile, the KBPBI is focusing its oversight on issues such as outsourcing, wage structures, and social security for platform workers.
In an effort to find a balanced approach, the Indonesian Employers Association (Apindo) and labor representatives have agreed to form a joint drafting team. They also plan to conduct comparative studies in Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, and the Philippines to observe how those nations manage industrial relations and investment climates while protecting worker interests.
