Indonesia launches 100 GWp solar power program to boost energy sovereignty
President Prabowo Subianto has officially launched Indonesia’s massive 100 GWp solar power program, aiming to achieve this capacity within three years to bolster national energy sovereignty and reduce dependence on fossil fuels. The program was inaugurated with a groundbreaking ceremony in Gilimanuk, Bali.
The initial phase of the initiative targets 17 GW of solar capacity, involving 14 projects currently in various stages of development across several provinces, including West Java, Central Java, Bali, Bangka Belitung, and Riau Islands. These projects include large-scale, floating, and rooftop solar installations, as well as decentralized systems for rural electrification. To ensure grid stability, the plan includes the deployment of approximately 33 GW of battery energy storage systems (BESS).
Estimates suggest the program will require approximately US$ 73 billion in investment and has the potential to create over 5.5 million jobs. Beyond economic impact, the transition is expected to significantly reduce carbon emissions and decrease national diesel fuel consumption. For instance, solar projects in Bali alone are projected to save 0.6 million kiloliters of diesel annually. The government intends to utilize both large-scale utility projects and community-based solar to drive this energy transition.
