Indonesia launches 100 GWp solar power program in Bali
President Prabowo Subianto officially launched the 100 GWp solar power plant (PLTS) program in Gilimanuk, Jembrana, Bali, on August 25, 2026. During the launch, which coincided with a national holiday, the President commended his ministers for their dedication to government duties despite the holiday.
Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia stated that the massive project requires an estimated investment of US$ 73 billion. The initiative is expected to create approximately 5.52 million jobs and could save the state budget (APBN) more than Rp 73 trillion annually by reducing reliance on diesel and gas.
Electricity production costs from the solar plants are projected to be between 5 and 6 US cents per kWh, though final pricing will depend on the capacity and duration of battery energy storage systems (BESS) required for grid stability. The program is also anticipated to reduce national diesel consumption by 6 million kiloliters per year and cut carbon emissions by 140.16 million tons of CO2 annually.
