Indonesia launches carbon unit registry to boost carbon trading

The Indonesian government has officially activated the Sistem Registri Unit Karbon (SRUK) to strengthen the country's carbon‑credit trading mechanism. The registry is designed to ensure accurate and transparent recording of carbon units, prevent duplicate claims, and link projects to the Indonesia Carbon Exchange (IDX Carbon).

SRUK opens participation beyond large corporations, allowing communities that manage social forestry and indigenous forests to engage in carbon trading. Forest Minister Raja Juli Antoni said the system lets people at the grassroots level take part. Hadi Prayitno, Executive Director of The Reform Initiatives, praised the policy for giving developers the option to use either the national registry or international standards such as VERRA, Gold Standard and Plan Vivo. Launched on 9 July 2026, SRUK monitors the registration, verification and issuance of carbon credits, integrating them into the national exchange.
