Indonesia launches Geber Mas 2026 mosque cleaning movement

The Indonesian Ministry of Religious Affairs has launched the ‘Geber Mas 2026’ (Gerakan Bersih-Bersih Masjid) national movement. Centered at Masjid Fatahillah in Jakarta, the initiative involves more than 50,000 mosques and prayer rooms across Indonesia.

Minister of Religious Affairs Nasaruddin Umar stated that the movement aims to build ecological awareness through places of worship. He emphasized that maintaining the cleanliness of mosques is essential for spiritual quality, noting that a clean environment allows worshippers to concentrate better during prayer.

The program encourages a culture of ‘gotong royong’ (mutual cooperation), urging families to participate in cleaning carpets, toilets, and surrounding areas like drainage systems. Beyond physical cleanliness, the Minister envisions mosques evolving into community hubs for social, educational, economic, and cultural empowerment.
