Indonesia launches national carbon market to boost green financing

President's Special Envoy for Climate and Energy Hashim S. Djojohadikusumo announced the launch of Indonesia's national carbon market on 9 July 2026, describing it as a major breakthrough for the country's energy transition and a new source of green financing for sectors such as PT PLN (Persero). He linked the market to the Paris Agreement commitments and highlighted the establishment of the Carbon Unit Regulation System (SRUK) as a long‑awaited step that has drawn positive reactions from domestic industry and international investors.

The Indonesia Forest Business Association (APHI) in Riau, together with environmental‑tech firm Fairatmos, held a discussion on the new Permenhut No 6/2026 and the earlier Perpres No 110/2025, which set out procedures for carbon offset trading in forest concession areas. APHI Riau Chair Muller Tampubolon emphasized that the regulations give certainty for forest businesses to monetize carbon benefits, while noting challenges related to project costs, market pricing, financing and capacity building.
