Indonesia launches task force for 2026 IORA chairmanship

The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has launched the ‘Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) Indonesia 2026 Task Force’ to strengthen diplomacy and national interests within the Indian Ocean region. Santo Darmosumarto, Director General for Asia-Pacific and Africa, emphasized that the effectiveness of Indonesia’s diplomacy depends on moving from ad-hoc coordination to a structured, active, and sustainable approach.

During a public lecture at Andalas University, Darmosumarto highlighted the strategic importance of Indonesia’s position between the Indian and Pacific oceans. He noted that West Sumatra serves as a primary gateway to the Indian Ocean, making the province central to IORA’s priority areas, including the blue economy, fisheries management, marine tourism, and disaster mitigation.

The task force aims to oversee Indonesia’s upcoming 2026 chairmanship, focusing on maritime security, trade routes, energy security, and regional stability. It is also expected to drive concrete work programs, optimize IORA funding, and strengthen partnerships with dialogue partner countries.
